Knowledge Management Strategy Services

Overview

A Knowledge Management strategy results in recommendations for implementing many complimentary elements, such as solutions related to communities of practice, collaborative technologies, and content management. Overall, the KM strategy seeks to support an organization's human transformation in making it run more efficiently and increasing productivity, therefore becoming more competitive. KM is often mis-targeted as mostly a technology-based solution or discipline. While technology is indeed a vital part of a KM solution, technology is primarily an enabler to successfully implementing the KM strategy.

At Vitesse Solutions, we define KM as a discipline that systematically leverages content, intellectual capital and expertise to increase organizational effectiveness though improved quality, productivity and efficiency. Moreover, improved KM enables organizations to effectively locate, create, share and reuse the knowledge of its personnel, customers, external vendors and other key constituents. A well organized KM Strategy provides a roadmap for making value-added solutions visible, concrete, actionable, and measurable. For the KM Strategy to succeed, Vitesse uses a methodology approach focused on answering the question: "How can we leverage knowledge to support value creation?"

Why the KM Strategy is so Important

It is a well-known fact that successful implementation of a Knowledge Management process within an organization is extremely difficult. Most experts agree that most internal KM processes are underutilized mostly due to poor design and lack of understanding of what is required.  However, even a poorly designed KM process has great value vis-à-vis no process at all. But to maximize the investment, creating a well-informed, organized roadmap (or strategy) to an optimal and doable implementation is the primary step toward success.

The more organized and efficient a firm can become in broadly managing the process and flow of its knowledge and intellectual capital, the more successful it will be in competing in the marketplace.  Identifying and supporting internal communities of common interest within and across silos and then enabling their collaboration and sharing are critical in accomplishing this.  Whether knowledge is formally documented or resident through discussions or other means is not initially important.  The important issue in building a broad KM process is to break down barriers between silos and then create conduits to freely and efficiently flow all types of useful knowledge for communities and individuals to reuse and continuously build and improve upon previous iterations.  Understanding these complexities and creating a well developed strategy to address them is a necessary prerequisite.

Why it is important to hire the right consultant

Over the years KM consulting has become very convoluted with a mix of theoretical approaches, general business process improvement (BPI) consultants, software vendors, and a small group of experts with real world, hands-on experience.  An example of your choices would be if someone were to ask you if you would like to learn to play golf from:
  1. Someone who never golfed in their life but watched it a lot and wrote a  book about golf theories;
  2. A former baseball player who knows a lot about athletics and little experience in golf, but recently took it up;
  3. A manufacturer of golf equipment; or
  4. Jack Nicklaus/Nancy Lopez.

While all might be helpful to some extent, who would you choose?  Many organizations unknowingly choose the equivalent of 1, 2 or 3 when choosing their KM consultant.  Vitesse Solutions has access to experts who have walked in your shoes and successfully implemented and managed internal KM processes.  We have the expertise as well as the methods to transfer our expertise into your unique situation.
