Analysis of Internal Communities

Overview

What an individual comes to know is significantly related to their personal associations. These are the "communities" (or more commonly known as "Communities of Practice") in which people belong to -- both formal (departmental, teams, etc.) and informal (friendships, colleagues, etc.). Understanding the dynamics of communities, how they are formed and how they operate, allows managers to visualize and understand the myriad of relationships that can either facilitate or impede the transfer of knowledge and best practices.

Vitesse Solutions has developed a diagnostic tool and analytical process that can assess the dynamic patterns that exist within the relationships in both formal and informal networking. While organizations often attempt to support their internal communities and networks they are often at a loss as to how to most effectively do this.  The reason is that management does not normally have enough understanding of the dynamics that make the current communities flow and therefore, they are unable to provide mechanisms to provide better support.  Effective intervention to support communities, as well as creating communities, also requires a deeper understanding of the most appropriate methods to enhance the power of each community.

Inaccurate assumptions by managers of how to intervene with communities often lead to costly and sometimes counterproductive actions. Correcting these common misperceptions is critical to ensuring the success of a given intervention plan and is key for an organization to improve its ability to create, share and capitalize on its knowledge.

Why an Analysis of Internal Communities is so Important

If the life of an organization is its collective knowledge vis-à-vis its competitors. Then its lifeblood is the knowledge flow that exists within and between its communities that identify, share and validate the most useful knowledge for others to use and build on -- then share again.  Sub-optimization within this flow significantly effects the efficiency and productivity of the organization. Therefore, it is vital for management to understand this knowledge flow in order to work to enhance it.
